Top feline ER tips at ESFM Congress in Croatia

Tim Hackett, Head of the Critical Care Unit at the James L Voss Veterinary Medical Center at Colorado State University, is the busiest of 10 world class speakers at the European Society of Feline Medicine
(ESFM) Congress on ‘Feline ER – accident and emergency in general practice’ to be held in Dubrovnik (June 19 – 21). The ESFM Congress sponsors are Boehringer Ingelheim, Hill’s, Merial, Bayer and Intervet- Schering Plough.

A teacher of small emergency, critical care and respiratory medicine for the past 12 years Professor Hackett will be sharing his vast experience in the field of emergency care by speaking on:
• Preparing for the unexpected - emergencies in general practice
• Breathe deeply...managing thoracic trauma
• Is it all going belly-up?...abdominal trauma
• Help!!! Assessment and management of the collapsed cat
• Sweet thoughts...diagnosing and managing diabetic ketoacidosis

• Blood and fire - indications and intricacies of blood transfusions
• Gasping and panting - approach to the dyspnoeic cat.

‘Feline emergency medicine challenges me like no other part of my practice. The small patient size and stoic behaviour keeps me on my toes. We have to rely on our senses more for feline emergency practice than any other aspect of the specialty. Palpation and auscultation skills as well as close observation are essential as many of our invasive diagnostics simply can't be performed in the critical feline.’
Tim Hackett DVM, MS, DACVECC

The three days of scientific sessions at the ESFM Congress have been divided into themes covering a wide range of emergency care from head trauma to pain relief, and orthopaedic and soft tissue injuries to seizures and poisoning. Details of the full programme can be found on www.fabcats.org

The ESFM Congress has always been more then just a great scientific conference. It is a chance to enjoy a great city, socialise with your fellow delegates, and party in some fantastic locations. Flights to Dubrovnik are still inexpensive; the airport is only 5 km from the congress hotel. Why not add on a few days for a break in the sun?

Registration costs £400.00 (€525.00). ESFM members can use three £20.00 educational vouchers.

To register for the courses please download the CPD registration form here and return to the FAB office, Taeselbury, High Street, Tisbury, Wiltshire SP3 6LD or, alternatively, call FAB on 0870 742 2278 to make your booking.
